My Music Post for the Week

High on Fire.
I like a lot of music, I spent years listening to nothing but hardcore and punk rock.
It was the whole hardcore/crossover/metal stuff that was my favorite from that period. DRI,
COC (Before Pepper), Cryptic Slaughter’s first record.
It was bands like those that really made me appreciate metal. There were some killer metal bands then as well, Ludichrist, Carnivore, stuff like that.
Then I spent years listening to rockabilly and psychobilly, I still like all of that even tho now I listen to rockabilly rarely anymore.
But it was 1996 that I first heard Sepultura’s record Chaos AD. It fucked my whole world up. Once Roots came out I had really started listening to a lot of metal, Slayer, Sepultura, and a ton of other bands of that style, from thrash to grindcore, but damn Naplam Death sucked live when I saw them.

Enter 2000, my ex wife is in New Orleans and while she was there she saw a band, she got me the CD. It was High on Fire “The Art of Self Defense”, she told me that I’s like it.
I listened to it and it was like nothing I ever heard before, the first song off the cd, Baghdad is heavy as fuck and I wasn’t really ready for it. But it was the second song: “10,000 years” that blew my fucking mind. High on Fire has a way of going from mellow but heavy to fast and unbelievably heavy, so heavy that it fucking shakes your core. Matt Pike’s guitar work is double fast and heavy as you can imagine.
I like every single Cd of High on Fire’s, I don’t have a favorite, I have favorite songs off each record, 10,000 years and Master of Fists off the first record.
Then ”Surrounded by Thieves” came out, I finally got to see HOF they opened for Motorhead 3 times I ended up at each show, sorry Motorhead, you aren’t the loudest band on the planet anymore. “Speedwolf” and “Thraft of Canaan” are fuckin amazing.



Ok how can it get better??? Well, the next two cd’s “Blessed Black Wings” and “Death is this Communion” are both epic records. All they did is get tighter and heavier, as if that’s even possible, but they did it.





Now comes the CD that I got last week “Snakes for the Divine” I first put it on in my van and I wasn’t too sure about it, generally HOF is too bass heavy to sound right in my van, so I was bummed. But then I got home and listened to it, but it was late and I couldn’t do it loud, Dre was asleep and I didn’t want to wake the neighbors up.
But then, I took it to work and put it on. Holy fucking shit, this is the heaviest CD yet by them, its fuckin brutal, GET the CD NOW. The title song hits so hard that I had to stop was I was doing and just listen, that song and “Bastrd Samuri” I tend to lose myself in HOF, one of the few bands that I can listen to that will bring me back to normal. One of the few bands I will just listen to at full volume by myself. Go get the cd, go see them live. This shit will change your life.

ST VITUS.

Ok I bet we all have a band that we always wish we had seen, with a particular line up etc, that we are pretty sure we never will.

The first band on my list, Scott Weinrich (Wino) era St Vitus.
After first hearing St Vitus on an SST complilation in 86 i believe, it blew me away. Yes, metal on SST, THE ONLY METAL EVER ON SST.

The first St Vitus with Scott Reegers singing is the first real DOOM metal record. They took what BlackSabbath did and made it heavier and darker. But then came Wino, they made the record "Born Too Late" that to this day is heavier than every fuckin band out there that thinks they are heavy, period.

Then comes the St Vitus "Live" record. The one record I wanted to see live, I really couldnt have imagined what it would gbe like to see them live. I knew the Wino had his side projects, Spirit CAravan, the Hidden Hand, and the band I will see in March, Shrinebuilder.

St Vitus played in LA, the first time since 1988, on jan 28, 2010.

Then it got crazier, after an hour of St Vitus playing like no other, the drummer Henry Vasquez hitting the drums as hard as he possibly can and Marc and David playin with it turned up to 11, Wino walks off stage.

and Scott Reagers walked on stage to sing the most amazing and most covered St Vitus song off the first record "Burial at Sea"

holy fucking shit!

that was amazing and probably will never happen again!
Then Wino came back and closed the show with "Born too Late"

It took my ears took a long time to stop ringing, I dont think anything will beat it.

St Vitus go there and buy the Live CD if you dont have it.

Twitter + Emily Marilyn = NYC Hardcore = Doom Metal

you might wonder how that works...

OK, i have a Twitter Account, rarely use it but what the hell, I follow some random people and whatnot on there. Feel free to follow me if thats your thing, i think its a bit weird but fuck it.

so, thursday morning, i see a tweet (AACK) from Emily Marilyn, (Shes rad) saying that Agnostic Front is playing with her bf's band Viva Hate that night at the Redwood Bar.

AF is one of the best hardcore bands EVER, PERIOD, I don"t care what you say its true. So i did a search and read that on this tour they were going to play the entire album "Victim in Pain" back to back!!! Holy shit, ok fuck I have to go.

Ok it was kick ass to see them in a bar the size of my living room. But it gets better.

I run into my buddy Vince there, dont see him all that often, the first words out of his mouth are "You going to St.Vitus?"

Uhhh, excuse me???

"yeah they are playing the end of the month downtown."

Ok, St Vitus is the heaviest band ever and the very top of the list of bands I have to see if Wino ever decides to put it together for them to play here.

So, yes, it's true.

and the Saviours rule as well!!!

So, thanx to Twitter and the one and only Emily Marilyn (You fuckin RULE, Darlin!!!) I get to see the greatest metal band of all time, if it wasn't for her post I would have missed it, run into Vince and he would have told me and I would have sat and cried.

I like Twitter now, even tho it weirds me out.

why yesterday ruled.

Yesterday was my birthday, it ended up ruling.

why did it rule? well, i got calls from Harpoon and Grant saying that the one and only PENTAGRAM was playing! no fucking way, if you don't know who Pentagram is, read about em here, and get the CD's "First Daze Here" and "Turn to Stone" both reissues of earler stuff.

they started playing metal in 1971! and somehow they are still doin it and holy fuckin shit they sounded amazing and were heavy as shit!

The Crossover...

In the mid '80s something happened to hardcore. The scene started to fall apart, and that sucked, but something else came out of it. Metal started invading hardcore. Now i don't mean melodic pop metal from that period, well some of that crap did invade and it sucked, think Discharge 1986, definately not "Never Again..."

but what did come out of it was some insane fast hardcore/metal that fuckin ruled and still rules!

Stuff like:

In my eyes, this is the ULTIMATE crossover record, holy crap it is amazing.

this is the DRI record that came out a little bit after

the COC record above. More metal yet still hardcore.

this Cryptic Slaughter record is brutal, fast venice hardcore/metal.

this record's second side has also been called the first real Death Metal...

The Bay areas "Attitude Adjustment" fast and tight, this record is still to this day amazing.

then you have some stuff that is more metal than hardcore like Nuclear Assault from NYC. that logo is way metal.

and then the ultimate crossover style band to come from NYC, Peter Steele's Carnivore.

Alot of people say that the Cro Mags is a crossover band but I don't, the NYC sound from the mid 80's always had a metal edge to it, the second record maybe.

the first Cro-Mags album might still be the greatest record of all time.

havent put up any music lately...
so, today we have the immortal Exodus, born of the Hardcore/metal crossover of the mid 80's, well, thats at least when there first record came out. heavy and fast, killer shit.
